CHICAGO — After a Target Field sweep and a three-game slide, Atlanta finally got a clean night on the road.
According to the Associated Press recap carried by ESPN, the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Rate Field. ESPN lists Atlanta at 75-53 (33-30 away) after the win and Chicago at 66-61 (37-25 home). The game was a makeup from June 11.
Holmes’ no-hit bid
Grant Holmes took a no-hitter into the seventh before Andrew Benintendi lined a single to left with nobody out. That hit followed a leadoff walk to Miguel Vargas. Holmes was lifted after the single; the AP says the 30-year-old right-hander went six-plus innings on 94 pitches, walking three and striking out three, improving to 8-5.
Holmes had retired 18 of the first 20 White Sox batters. Chicago’s only earlier baserunners were walks to Colson Montgomery (two outs, second) and Drew Romo (one out, fifth).
Bullpen closes the one-hitter
Didier Fuentes finished the seventh by striking out the side and stranding two runners. Dylan Lee threw a perfect eighth, and Raisel Iglesias worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 26th save, completing a one-hitter.
Riley’s two RBI
Austin Riley accounted for both Atlanta runs:
- Third inning: Riley’s RBI double into the left-field corner scored Mauricio Dubón for a 1-0 lead.
- Seventh inning: Michael Harris II led off with a double that chased White Sox starter Anthony Kay. Riley singled off Huascar Brazoban to score Harris and make it 2-0.
Dubón finished with three hits and a run scored, per the AP.
White Sox starter line
Kay (9-6) allowed two runs on five hits in six-plus innings, walking one and striking out six. Chicago has dropped three of four.
