MILWAUKEE — Atlanta’s road series in Milwaukee stayed stuck in low gear on Saturday.
According to the Associated Press recap carried by ESPN, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Saturday, Aug. 22, at American Family Field. ESPN lists Atlanta at 75-55 (33-32 away) after the loss and Milwaukee at 81-49 (45-23 home).
The AP notes the Brewers have won six of their last seven. Atlanta has lost five of six and seven of nine.
Bauers’ marathon at-bat flips the third
Atlanta led 1-0 after Michael Harris II doubled home Drake Baldwin in the first. Harris’ double put runners on second and third with one out, but the Braves could not add on. The AP says Atlanta finished 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Milwaukee took the lead for good with three unearned runs in the third:
- Starter Martín Pérez (8-8) mishandled a dribbler from leadoff man Cooper Pratt, who beat the throw to first.
- Two outs later, Pratt scored from third when William Contreras singled to left for Milwaukee’s first hit. Contreras went 2-for-4 and is 6-for-8 in the series, per the AP.
- Jake Bauers then fouled off seven straight pitches before finishing a 12-pitch plate appearance with a 413-foot home run to center — a two-run blast that made it 3-1.
Joey Ortiz doubled and scored in the fourth to push the lead to 4-1.
Henderson outlasts Pérez
Logan Henderson (8-2) struck out four, allowing one run, five hits, and two walks over six innings. The AP says he has not allowed more than three runs in any of his 18 career starts.
Pérez threw 97 pitches but lasted only four innings as Milwaukee worked deep counts.
Ninth-inning threat snuffed
Atlanta brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Aaron Ashby allowed consecutive singles to Ozzie Albies and Mauricio Dubón. Ashby then retired Lane Thomas on a fly to left and got a double-play grounder from Austin Riley for his second save.
The AP notes usual closer Trevor Megill was unavailable after pitching the previous two days.
